Lavender Hill Farm is the oldest lavender farm on Vashon. Established ten years ago by Gary and Theo Christman, new owners Catherine MacNeal and Tom Dalzell have carried on the tradition of providing U-Cut Lavender daily during the lavender season. The lower gate is open 10-4 daily from early July until mid-August. You’ll find clippers, rubber bands, ribbon and how-to instructions at the self-serve table under the umbrella. Frequently, Cathy, Tom, one of their children or houseguests will be harvesting and can answer questions.

Lavender Hill Farm sits on the Burton hill, on the site of the original Vashon College, with beautiful views of Quartermaster Harbor and Mt. Rainier. This charming garden contains 2000 lavender plants. The lower sloping field is a mass of Provence, Grosso and Silverleaf varieties, evoking the feel of the French countryside. Twickle Purple rings the lower beds.

Nestled between fields is a greenhouse and a charming lavender drying house leading to a secret garden. The lovely meditation rock ringed by 21 varieties of lavender is a favorite place for family photos. The upper bed has just been planted with Royal Velvet, and there is more of that stunning angustifolia under the Sally Holmes roses. Other varieties include Melissa (pink), Alba (white), Otto Quast (Spanish lavender).

In addition to daily U-Cut and the Lavender Farm Tour on July 19th and 20th, Lavender Hill Farm also hosts plein air Paint Outs, organized by Karen Dale – for more information, visit www.karendale.com

To reach Lavender Hill Farm, proceed on Vashon Highway to the flashing light in the town or Burton. This is the fourth flashing light from the north end ferry and the first flashing light from the south end ferry. Follow the signs west and up the hill to Lavender Hill Farm and enter through the gate at the bottom of the lavender field, at 238th St. and 104th Ave. S.W.
